Envy Devotional: Monday, February 22

Begin with prayer asking God to open your heart and mind to His Word.

Read James 3:14-4:2: But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.  What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.

James says quite clearly that we’re not to boast in our “bitter jealously” and “selfish ambition,” we boast when we ignore the sin that rests in our hearts.  Are you able to acknowledge the sin of envy in your heart?  If so, repent of the sin of envy in your heart?  To repent means to give your offense to God and seek a changed life, ask God to help you in this.

Read verses 17-18 again, what does the “wisdom from above” include?  Peace has no envy.  Being peaceful is being content.  Peace brings a “harvest of righteousness,” that is right living caused by a changed heart, which all of us desire!  Read Romans 5:1-11.

Seek Jesus, right living, and pray for a changed heart and renewed eyes.
