Sermon Summary: 23 September 2018
Sermon Big Idea: Jesus gives life.
The disciples would believe. Mary, Martha and Lazarus would come to believe. Do we believe that Jesus gives life?
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was deeply moved in His spirit and troubled. “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Lord,” they told Him, “come and see” (11:33-34).
Jesus’ response here is significant: He was deeply moved in His spirit and troubled. The verb used for that phrase is only used four other times in the New Testament and each time it is associated with a sense of indignation and anger.
He was angry at sin.
As they traveled to the tomb, in verse 35, we find the shortest verse in the Bible: Jesus wept.
John wanted to show us, the readers, and Jesus wants to show us that by weeping God enters into the pain and sorrow of our lives.
He loves us and because He loves us, He joins us in our hurt. We’re never alone.
If Jesus loves me than why does He allow me to suffer? If He loves me than why am I without a job? If He loves me than why am I have relationship problems?
For His glory and your benefit. Maybe, God’s plan are far bigger and better than ours.
Maybe, just maybe, there are things in your life that need to die so that you can experience the fullness of life in Him.
We know we can’t do anything to reverse death. Death is coming for all of us. We’re powerless.
Why? Because death is the result of one thing. Sin. For the wages of sin is death.... (Romans 6:23). All of us have sinned, are sinning and will sin. We can’t fix our sin, but Jesus can. But Jesus can.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).
Jesus gives life.
What Jesus did that day with Lazarus, He will one day do again at your grave. The death and resurrection of Lazarus shows you two things, first, Jesus has incredible power. And second, this legendary event foreshadowed Jesus’ own resurrection.
If you surrender your life to Jesus you will experience life. Jesus gives life.
No matter how decayed you think your life or your situation may be, roll away the stone and let Jesus in.
